Jim Bidzos offered a more intimate account. In September 1989, he hired Kaliski as RSA Data Security's seventh employee — its first full-time cryptographer. Kaliski's timing was critical: he arrived just as the internet's foundational trust infrastructure needed to be built from scratch. Within months, he was supporting privacy-enhanced mail standards at the IETF and helping RSA's early customers — the leading technology companies of the era — integrate cryptography into their products.
By 1991, Kaliski was leading the effort to create what became PKCS, the Public-Key Cryptography Standards, a suite of specifications developed with Novell, Lotus, Apple, and Microsoft as participants. After RSA Laboratories, he moved to Verisign as CTO, where Bidzos now serves as CEO and Rivest as an advisor — a decades-long collaboration that has simply changed addresses.
